The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) revealed in a statement that around 100,000 people have applied for an interstate travel permit via the Gerak Malaysia app. About 300,000 people have registered with Gerak Malaysia, a mere 12 hours after the official app launch.

PDRM expects this number to increase substantially come 1 May 2020.

As part of phase four of the Movement Control Order (MCO), the government announced a loosening of travel restrictions, specifically for city folk who have been stranded in their hometowns before the MCO came into effect. They can apply for approval via the Gerak Malaysia app and if permission is granted, they can return home between 1-3 May 2020. Those without app access can submit a written application seeking approval at the nearest police station. It is necessary to make an appointment to avoid overcrowding.

However, PDRM may have jumped the gun a little as senior minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob later explained that interstate travel requires cabinet approval and that PDRM can only collect a “registration of interest.”

This is to accommodate proper planning and ensure interstate travel is done smoothly.

PDRM said that it will review and evaluate the trends in the applications they receive through the app. The data will then be submitted to the government ascertain the best date for travel based on the number of applications.

The police urge the public to only apply for interstate travel based on valid reasons so that the travel pass benefits those who genuinely need to travel.
