Galaxy Note FE “Fan Edition” hits Malaysia on 25 October for MYR2,599

Samsung Galaxy Note FE

Here’s one for Galaxy Note fans. Samsung is bringing another Note model to Malaysia, in the form of the Galaxy Note Fan Edition or Note FE. As mentioned in a previous post, the Galaxy Note FE is based on the Galaxy Note7 and was previously only available in limited units in South Korea.

Malaysia is the first country outside of its homeland to receive the device. In South Korea, the repackaged and improved Note formerly known as Galaxy Note7 is sold at KRW699,000 (MYR2,590).

Samsung Malaysia today informed us that the Galaxy Note FE will not be a limited run when it is sold here starting 25 October 2017. It will be sold alongside the flagship Galaxy Note8 as part of its official line-up of devices. This marks the first time Samsung is putting two Note devices side-by-side in its portfolio.

A new old Note

As you may know, the Galaxy Note FE is based on the now defunct Galaxy Note7, with several key changes and improvements. Firstly, it has a smaller battery compared to the Galaxy Note7, not only in dimensions but in capacity. Total juice is 3,200mAh, down from 3,500mAh.

Just like with the Galaxy Note8, Samsung has put the Galaxy Note FE through its stringent 8-point battery safety check to ensure durability and safety.

It also has Bixby support built in, although it lacks a dedicated Bixby button like on the Galaxy Note7, Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. Bixby functions will also lack Bixby Voice and Bixby Vision capabilities.

On the plus side, the Galaxy Note FE features everything else that was awesome with the Galaxy Note7. It rocks the same brilliant 5.7-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display with dual curve edges, powerful Exynos 8890 processor, 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage.

You’ll get the same awesome 12MP f/1.7 main camera and 5MP front-facing shooter.

The fingerprint sensor remains on the front, built into the home button. The much-loved S Pen is of course standard feature, slotted neatly in the familiar silo beneath the device.

The body is of course a beautiful blend of glass and metal, available in Onyx Black and Coral Blue.

It’s IP68 dust- and water-resistant, just like all other Galaxy flagships.

The 3,200mAh battery supports fast charging over USB Type-C, as well as fast wireless charging.

Pricing and availability

The Galaxy Note Fan Edition hits all authorised Samsung stores nationwide on 25 October, and is offered at a price of MYR2,599.

Early adopters and power users may want to consider the flagship Galaxy Note8 though, with features a ground-breaking Infinity Display and dual-camera setup with OIS. For the rest of us, the Galaxy Note FE is a solid choice.
