CEO Mark Zuckerberg took centre stage at Facebook‘s f8 conference in San Franciso to unveil the next evolution of the world’s biggest social network. The change? Your Profile. Zuckerberg said that the original profile was like the last five minutes of your life. The 2008 Profile update extended that to the last 15 minutes. This all new Profile unveiled today is “the rest”, something he calls Timeline.
Timeline was completely rethought from ground up. Zuckerberg commented, “Timeline is the story of your life.” There’s even a new permissions screen aimed at staving off privacy concerns.
Timeline is divided into three key areas:
- Cover – It’s the first thing people see when they visit your Profile page. It can be an image that represents you. Or not.
- Stories – This is where you share your life stories, events, photos, posts.
- Apps – Whether it’s watching movies on Netflix, listening to Last.fm or recording your runs on Nike+, you share your updates here.

My take on the new Timeline
It’s sleek, it’s visually very, very appealing. Is this the new Facebook of new? I personally think the UI is refreshing, although some commented that it resembles a very nicely themed Tumblr blog. It brings with it more structure, compartmentalised but far less busy than the current. I like it. I really do.
How do you feel about the Timeline?
