As teased in an earlier post, Xiaomi has made available new additions to its expansive Redmi line. If you’re in the market for an uber affordable device, then the entry-level Redmi 5 should be a good choice, at MYR499. Higher up the spectrum, you can opt for a Redmi 5 Plus that comes with 4GB of RAM amongst other things, for MYR899.
Drilling down to some details, the low-spec Redmi 5 packs 2GB RAM + 32GB of storage, compared to the 3GB RAM + 32GB storage variant. Everything else is the same: 5.7-inch 18:9 full-screen HD+ display, Snapdragon 450 processor, 12MP rear shooter and a front-facing 5MP shooter.
The device is equipped with a fingerprint sensor on the rear, and comes with a fairly large 3,300mAh battery.
The Redmi 5 Plus, on the other hand, now comes with a whopping 4GB of RAM, with 64GB of storage. It gets a sharper 5.99-inch FullHD+ display, and runs on the powerful but efficient Snapdragon 625 chipset.
The device also gets a 12MP main camera and 5MP selfie shooter, but gets a larger 4,000mAh battery.
In summary, there are four variants in the Redmi 5 family available in Malaysia, sporting Black, Blue and Gold colour options.
Here’s the full list:
- Redmi 5 (2GB RAM + 16GB storage) – MYR499
- Redmi 5 (3GB RAM + 32GB storage) – MYR679
- Redmi 5 Plus (3GB RAM + 32GB storage) – MYR749
- Redmi 5 Plus (4GB RAM + 64GB storage) – MYR899
This is a strong line-up from Xiaomi for its bread-and-butter series, and it hits the sweet spot of the sub-MYR1,000 segment. My personal choice: the 4GB Redmi 5 Plus.
