Canon has released a firmware update for the EOS M, its first digital single lens non-reflex camera powered by the powerful DIGIC 5 image processor and large 18MP APS-C sized CMOS sensor. The update boosts focusing speed of the One-Shot AF. Canon also introduced the new EF-M11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM (Stepping Motor Mechanism) ultra wide-angle lens.
New EOS M Firmware
The new firmware updates boosts focusing speed of the One-Shot AF, especially noticeable when Live Multi-Point AF is being used. The update brings a maximum 2.3x improvement over previous speeds. The firmware update is a free download from the Canon website.
Expanding the lens portfolio
With the introduction of the EF-M11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM ultra wide-angle lens, Canon expands its portfolio of more than 60 EF and EF-S lenses via Mount Adapter EF-EOS M.
The multi-talented ultra wide lens provides class-leading optical performance while remaining compact by using a lens-retraction mechanism. When being carried, the lens shortens to just 60.9 x 58.2mm.
The new lens uses two aspheric lenses and an Ultra-Low Dispersion (UD) lens to maintain consistent high visual quality from the centre to the peripheral edged of a frame. The arrangement minimises flare and ghosting, and achieves superior colour balance.
Canon has also added an Image Stabiliser, effectively giving a shutter speed 3 stops faster. This is the first time an Image Stabiliser has been built into a wide-angle EF lens. For smoother, soft-toned backgrounds, Canon uses a 7-blade Electromagnetic Diaphragm (EMD) with a circular aperture.
The new lens isn’t just great for stills, it is also made for video. Thanks to STM, it offers extremely quiet and smooth movie servo auto-focusing. When taking video, the lens’s drive noise is only 30dB or lower – comparable to a notebook’s internal fan.
Impressively, the new lens has rapid focus search – taking just 0.35 seconds or less from infinity to 0.15m throughout the zoom range. It also has the shortest focusing distance in its class, bring able to focus on objects a mere 0.15m from it.
