Be the first to own the iPhone 6s in Malaysia, but prepare to pay the price of a MacBook

Apple iPhone 6s

When it comes to Apple devices, especially the iPhone, Malaysia resides in the bottom rung on Apple’s list in terms of availability. We’re sadly usually lumped together with third world countries like Mozambique or Kenya. Which is rather annoying considering our high mobile penetration rate and GDP.

That hasn’t stopped hardcore Apple fans from getting their hands on these devices in the past though. But wait a minute, Lazada Malaysia is making it possible for you to be one of the first people to own the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus in Malaysia. Plus they come with Apple SEA warranty.

12 countries officially kick off sales of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus today including our neighbours Singapore and Australia. Apple launched the ninth generation iPhone on 10 September, packing a stronger alloy body, uprated hardware, a better 12MP camera, 3D Touch and iOS 9.

The iPhone comes in 16GB, 64GB and 128GB capacities in a choice of Gold, Rose Gold, White and Space Grey.

On Lazada, the cheapest iPhone you can get is the iPhone 6s 16GB (grey) which retails for RM3,579. Considering 16GB storage is unacceptable in this day and age, you’re likely to end up opting for the 64GB version, which will set you back RM4,030. Rose Gold, which is expected to be the most popular colour option can cost up to RM6,748 for the 128GB.

The iPhone 6s Plus at base level costs RM5,088 while the 64GB and 128GB retails at RM5,555 and RM5,988 respectively. The Rose Gold 128GB version can cost up to RM7,288.

The iPhone 6s 16Gb actually doesn’t look too bad, considering the horrible level our poor Ringgit is at currently.

Where the bloody hell is Malaysia?

Just to compare, the official iPhone pricing available from the Singapore Apple Online Store are as below:

iPhone 6s

  • 16GB – S$1,048 (RM3,235)
  • 64GB – S$1,218 (RM3,759)
  • 128GB – S$1,388 (RM4,284)

iPhone 6s Plus

  • 16GB – S$1,218 (RM3,759)
  • 64GB – S$1,388 (RM4,282)
  • 128GB – S$1,558 (RM4,809)

For the price of an iPhone 6s 16GB you could pick up a 11-inch MacBook Air. Or a 13-inch MacBook Pro, if you’re looking at the iPhone 6s Plus 128GB. Just saying.

But you know, devotion is a peculiar thing. There is no justifying the purchase of an Apple product. Apple fans tend to be early adopters and loyal. Such is the power of the brand.

I remember days of the first generation iPhone. There were some going for as high as RM5,000 (and maybe more). Not shabby for a phone that couldn’t MMS or forward messages.

The thing is, there will be quarters taking advantage of scarcity. And there will be scalpers. Supply and demand. There will also be channels like Lazada and DirectD that will dangle the carrot, at a price.

The point is this: You can’t stop a consumer from buying what they want, whatever the cost.

The thousand dollar question is: how much are you willing to shell out for an iPhone?
