The late Steve Jobs may just crawl out of the grave and slap his beloved Apple execs but a 7-inch iPad is almost inevitable. In an email trail between Apple execs revealed in court in the midst of the Samsung-Apple legal battle, Apple exec Eddy Cue said, “I believe there is a market for a 7-inch iPad and we should do one.

The email thread involved key Apple execs – Eddie Cue, Scott Forstall, Phil Schiller and Apple CEO Tim Cook.

Evidence does point to the existence of the 7-inch iPad, loosely believed to be called the “iPad mini”, and may be slated for a September release together with the new iPhone (“iPhone 5”).

While many argue that Apple is merely reacting to the market (hint: Samsung Tab), it really points to a business decision – is there a market for one? The iPad continues to dominate the tablet market with a 60% marketshare despite all Android has thrown at it and this does not look to change much in the near future.

A 7-inch iPad would appeal to the lower spectrum of the market and will go head on with the likes of the Samsung GALAXY Tab series and Google’s Nexus 7 tablets.
