Amazon launches new Fire HD 8 tablets, pre-order now

Amazon Fire HD 8

Amazon has introduced its next-generation Fire HD 8 tablet line-up—the Fire HD 8, Fire HD 8 Plus, and Fire HD 8 Kids Edition. Available for pre-order now starting from USD89.99 (MYR390).

Fire HD 8

Amazon continues to employ a similar strategy to its Kindle range—offer inexpensive devices and lock users into its ecosystem. The Fire HD 8 is a entry-level tablet featuring an 8-inch HD display (1280×800) and comes powered with an undisclosed 2GHz quad-core processor mated with 2GB of RAM. The new SoC is claimed to be 30 per cent faster than the previous generation. Storage is either 32GB or 64GB onboard, with support for up to 1TB of expandable storage via microSD.

Amazon also offers free unlimited cloud storage for all Amazon content and photos taken with the tablet.

It offers up to 12 hours of battery life and it charges via USB-C. Unfortunately, it doesn’t support fast charge; a full charge will take roughly five hours.

Despite its seemingly underpowered hardware, Amazon has baked in Game Mode to ensure a distraction-free gaming experience.

Being an Amazon device, you have access to millions of movies, TV shows, songs, Kindle eBooks, magazines, apps, and games via the Amazon ecosystem as well as third-party apps via the Amazon App Store.

Also, Alexa is always at hand (hands-free) to lend you a hand when you need help. Just say the word.

Fire HD 8 Plus

The Fire HD 8 Plus is everything the Fire HD 8 is but better. It sports the same 8-inch HD display, 2GHz quad-core processor but packs 3GB of RAM, boasts wireless charging (it’s bundled with a wireless charging dock), and supports fast-charging. A 9W power brick is bundled in the box, helping the tablet charge up to full in less than four hours.

Amazon is bundling six months of Kindle Unlimited with each purchase. After six months, Kindle Unlimited renews at USD9.99 per month.

Fire HD 8 Kids Edition

The all-new Fire HD 8 Kids Edition is built ground-up for kids—an 8-inch tablet bundled with a kid-proof case that features an adjustable stand. Available in blue, pink, or purple, it comes with a two-year worry-free guarantee, and a year of Amazon FreeTime Unlimited.

Hardware-wise, it’s similar to the Fire HD 8—8-inch HD display, 32GB of storage expandable via microSD, up to 12 hours of battery life, and USB-C for charging.

Amazon FreeTime Unlimited gives kids over 20,000 premium, age-appropriate books, Audible books, educational apps, games, and videos on their tablet. This includes new and popular titles such as Pinkfong Baby Shark, Sonic Dash, Descendants Junior Novel, and Barbie Dreamtopia from brands like Smartstudy, PBS KIDS, SEGA, and Mattel. Kids can also enjoy over 2,000 Spanish language titles, like Pinkfong! Car Songs, Plaza Sesamo, National Geographic Readers: Los Tiburones (Sharks), and Los Sentidos de Los Insectos.

Kids can also easily discover over 1,500 educational titles organised by core curriculum and extracurricular topics, such as math, science, exercise, art, and virtual fieldtrips.

Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Edition

For a limited time, families will also have access to additional premium content from Homer and PBS Kids within FreeTime Unlimited. FreeTime Unlimited content is kid-friendly and hand-selected by the dedicated Amazon FreeTime tream. New titles are added regularly.

With FreeTime, parents can manage their child’s FreeTime settings, including the ability to set daily goals, age filters, and time limits for weekdays and weekends. Parents can also control what content kids can access. They will also have access to daily activity reports from any web browser via the Parent Dashboard.
