Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2018: 1-2-3 finish for Indonesian teams at Drivers’ World Championship Asia

Asia’s fastest and most energy-efficient drivers battled it out at the Drivers’ World Championship Asia today, marking the end of the four-day Make the Future festival of bright ideas in Singapore. As they have shown in the past, the Indonesian student teams made a clean sweep at the podium in the penultimate competition.

Claiming victory was the Semar Urban UGM Indonesia team (#507) from Universitas Gadjah Madah, followed by ITS Team 2 (#502) from Institute Sepuluh Nopbember and Garuda UNY ECO Team (#503) from Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta.

Seven top teams in the UrbanConcept category compete in the Drivers’ World Championship Asia, a unique head-to-head race format to see who’s the fastest, with the least amount of fuel.

The race kicked off with seven cars on the grid, with a mixture of Internal Combustion (ICE), Battery-Electric and Hydrogen class vehicles.

  • Semar Urban UGM Indonesia, Universitas Gadjah Mada, 507, Indonesia
  • Garuda UNY ECO Team, 503, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Battery-Electric

  • LH-EST, Lac Hong University, 701, Vietnam
  • Nogogeni ITS Team 1, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopbember, 703, Indonesia
  • Bumi Siliwangi Team 4, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesa, 707, Indonesia

Hydrogen

  • NTU Singapore 3D-Printed Car, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

The winning Semar Urban UGM Indonesia team took home USD3,000 cash. But cash isn’t the only thing the team wins. The top three teams from the Asia regional final will face off against the best UrbanConcept teams from the Americas and Europe in the Grand Final to be held at Make the Future Live in London, UK, on July 8, 2018.  The champion at the Grand Finals will get to spend time with Ferrari in Maranello.

The Shell Eco-marathon also recognises teams for off-track achievements including in for design, technical prowess, team spirit and more. Awarded teams also take home USD3,000 prize money each.

The global student competition is designed to challenge students to push the boundaries of energy efficiency on the road. Ultimately, it aims to inspire young people to become scientists and engineers of the future.

It’s part of Make the Future, a festival of ideas and innovations for Asia, providing a platform for innovation, collaboration and conversation about the global energy challenge.
