Sure, we love binge-watching TV shows and videos. Admit it (I do!). But sadly, for the most part, watching TV has always been a passive, one-way experience. Well the good news is, Netflix is flipping that concept on its head. Say hello to interactive storytelling on your TV. Let me explain.

What if TV isn’t a one-way street? What if you can decide how a story pans out?

With Netflix’s new interactive storytelling feature, you can. It lets you, and your kids interact with their favourite TV shows. Your kids can control the outcome of the stories, giving them influence on the story line and sway the outcome.

It isn’t only more fun, but also helps in building more engaging minds and unleashing creativity. It’s also empowering for kids, and keeps things exciting for them.

Over half of Netflix’s subscribers watch kids’ content, with the kids and family content audience growing more rapidly than the overall Netflix subscriber base.

I’m sure you remember “Choose Your Own Adventure” books. I used to love them. You flip through pages, influencing the course of the storyline and deciding what happens next.

Think of Netflix’s new feature a combination of much-loved adventure books with internet TV.

Its first “branching” narrative titles are Puss in Book: trapped in an Epic Tale (now available) and Buddy Thunderstruck: The Maybe Pile (coming July 14).

An exciting technology challenge

According to Netflix, the new experience was an exciting challenge for its technology team. Working with renowned content creators – DreamWorks Animation Television, American Greetings Entertainment and Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, it demonstrates the perfect blend of Silicon Valley and Hollywood.
