Huawei P9 is set to ignite Malaysia on 28 May

Huawei P9

Co-engineered with the renowned camera brand Leica, the Huawei P9 is set to thrill Malaysians come 28 May. The Huawei P9 series features a stunning dual-lens camera design, setting a new benchmark in smartphone photography.

Weirdly, Huawei has not revealed any pricing for its flagship device, but apparently will be revealed in the next three days. The Huawei P9 will be available in Prestige Gold, Titanium Grey and Mystic Silver.

The P9 series consists of the Huawei P9, P9 Lite and P9 Plus.

Here’s a quick spec run-down of the P9. Like the excellent Huawei P8 before this, the P9 features a 5.2-inch Full HD display. It feels more refined, if familiar, than the predecessor, still sporting a full-metal unibody. The display features 2.5D glass.

The flagship device weighs in at 144g, which is the same as the P8.

On the back is where interesting stuff lies. The camera visor is reminiscent of the Nexus 6P. Love it or hate it, it houses two 12MP f/2.2 cameras that boast 1.25 micron size pixels. It’s an interesting camera set-up – one takes in full RGB, while the other captures deep details in monochrome. The cool thing is, you can shoot in native black and white, Leica style.

Leica was involved in developing the P9’s camera algorithm, and the camera UI has a Leica look-and-feel, alongside official Leica fonts and shutter sound.

On the front it gets an 8MP f/2.4 selfie shooter.

With the trend of smartphones having biometric authentication, the P9 is no different. Like the Mate 8, it has a fingerprint sensor on the back.

The in-house designed and developed HiSilicon Kirin 955 octa-core processor drives the P9, coupled with either 4GB RAM + 64GB storage, or 3GB RAM + 32GB storage.

In terms of connectivity, the P9 has a dual-SIM, dual-standby setup via a hybrid SIM tray that also takes microSD.

It packs USB Type-C, and gets a massive 3,000mAh battery to keep it juiced throughout the day.

It runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow with the latest EMUI 4.1 layer on top.

Huawei P9 Plus

The P9 Plus sports a bigger 5.5-inch Full HD AMOLED panel with “Press Touch” (Huawei’s own ‘Force Touch technology).

Aside from the bigger display and slightly bigger battery (400mAh more than the P9), the P9 Plus is pretty similar to its smaller sibling.

Huawei P9 Lite

The P9 Lite, on the other hand, is the affordable P9 – packing a 5.2-inch Full HD display, but housed in plastic instead of metal.

Being the budget-friendly option, it gets the lower-spec Kirin 650 octa-core processor with 3GB of RAM and 16GB of onboard storage. No Leica wizardry in the camera set-up though – just a conventional 13MP f/2.0 main shooter and 8MP selfie unit.

It does however get the same 3,000mAh battery although it lacks USB Type-C.

Win an Honor Band Z1

In anticipation of the new Huawei P9 series, Huawei is running a contest on their Facebook page – essentially a ‘guess the price’ contest. Guess correctly and grab a Honor Band Z1.

Quick though, the contest opens until tomorrow.
