The big Wiko Robby phablet will rock you for less

Wiko Robby

Wiko might be a brand you’re starting to hear a little bit more these days, and you may have even read my reviews of the Highway Pure and Fever. Well, not one to stand still, the mighty French smartphone maker has rolled out its grande et belle – the Robby phablet. Made for media consumption, Robby brings it on in a big way, but with a minute MYR449 price tag.

Make it a grande, please

Robby is about big visuals. The 5.5-inch HD IPS screen with full lamination gives you great, crisp visuals and sharper contrast. Perfect for binging on iflix TV series on-the-go. Works great for web browsing, emails and if you need to, work (great for spreadsheets, since the screen is wider!).

No matter which orientation, the Robby is always the right side up.

Big on sound

What are crisp visuals if you don’t have the sound quality to back it up? Good audio on a smartphone is a dime in a dozen, let alone front-firing speakers.

This is where Robby surprises. It has a pair of front-facing stereo speakers that’s great for those Spotify moments, or for video playback.

The Robby has something called Auro 3D sound that lets you customise the audio profile to suit your ears.

Additionally, it’s equipped with dual microphones so it really doesn’t matter what orientation you pick up your phone. The screen and UI will adjust automatically, and audio will always be awesome.

Full metal jacket

Another impressive fact is that the Robby sports a metal back, unexpected for a device at this price point. It’s elegant-looking, and certainly makes it look more expensive that it is.

The metal back is also removable, so you can replace the 2,500mAh battery if you need to.

Affordable performer

The Robby has a 1.3GHz quad-core processor under the hood, mated to 1GB of RAM. For storage, there’s 16GB of onboard storage. If this is insufficient to store all those music files and high resolution selfies, then you can expand storage further with a microSD card (up to 64GB).

On the optics front, you’ll get an able 8MP autofocus camera on the rear that’s able to shoot in HDR. It can also shoot videos in 1080p.

A useful feature is the 5MP front selfie shooter that comes with a flash. Never have underexposed selfies ever again.

Big value

Powered by Android 6.0 Marshmallow with a dash of Wiko UI, Robby delivers good battery life, and outstanding value.

I think you’ll be hard-pressed to find a smartphone under MYR500 that boasts a metal build and packs so much kit.
