Want the most reliable notebook? Get a MacBook

MacBook Pro

I get asked this question all the time. What notebook should I get? Well, if reliability is what you’re looking for, then the Apple MacBook may be the best choice.

According to data from a Consumer Reports survey, MacBooks lead all notebooks in reliability and customer satisfaction. This is based on 58,000 subscribers who purchased notebooks between 2010 and 2015.

Almost 20% of notebooks experienced breakdown in the first three years of ownership. MacBooks meanwhile, enjoyed better failure rates compared to Windows-based notebooks from Acer, Lenovo, Samsung and other OEMs.

As a comparison of Apple’s portable portfolio, the MacBook Air has a low 7% estimated failure rate. In the meantime, the more powerful MacBook Pro was slightly higher at 9%.

ZDNet reports that Apple has  the most reliable notebooks by far – 10% breakdown rate in the first three years as opposed to Samsung and Gateway, at a distant 16%.

The rest of the industry, this includes Acer, Lenovo, Toshiba, HP, Dell and ASUS top out at 18-19%.

When used over long hours, Apple users still experience better reliability despite longer usage. Apple users use their Macs an average of 23 hours a week, 15% more than the average for Windows-based machines.

Amongst the broken, the most reliable were Gateway’s NV (I didn’t know they still exist) at 13% failure rate and LT (14%). Samsung’s ATIV Book (14%); Lenovo ThinkPads (15%); Dell XPS Line (15%). HP’s premium ENVY line lingers at the bottom with 20%, while Lenovo’s Y Series tops the bottom at 23%.

Macs more expensive to fix

On the flip side, when MacBooks do break down they’re more expensive to fix. So, it’s always advisable to buy AppleCare extended warranty when you purchase your Mac. Saves you the trouble of potential expensive repair bills later.

If you’re in Malaysia and need out of warranty repairs and service though, give Maccentric a buzz. The best there is.

In the report, it was also revealed that Windows machines are more likely to be lemons. Among those notebooks that broke, a whopping 55% did so multiple times.

Apple tops customers satisfaction

Apple is a consistent winner of customer satisfaction awards, including topping multiple J.D. Power and Associates indexes for over a decade. Almost three quarters of Apple notebooks users were completely satisfied with system reliability. What about Windows users? Only 38%.

Apple provides 90 days of complimentary phone and online chat support that can be extended for up to two years with an AppleCare Protection Plan.

Picking a notebook ultimately does still boils down to personal preference. Whether operating systems, budget and screen screen sizes, variables are far and wide. However, if reliability and durability is what you’re looking for, then you’ll have plenty of peace of mind with a MacBook.
