[First Impressions] Acer Liquid Z3S: Acer’s Little Wonder

The new Acer Liquid Z3S

Acer has been adept at packing value into its smartphone line, and today announces the Acer Liquid Z3S – the ultra-affordable dual-core smartphone for everyone. This compact, value-packed entry level smartphone runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and has some other nifty tricks up its sleeve. I’m fortunate to be one of the very first few to touch and use the device before it’s officially available in Malaysia. Here’s a quick hands-on first impression.

The new Acer Liquid Z3S

The Liquid Z3S maintains most of the features of its predecessor, the Liquid Z3, that was introduced in October last year. Weighing at a scant 115g, the Liquid Z3 packs a similar 3.5-inch HVGA (320 x 480) display, 1Ghz dual-core processor, 512MB RAM and 4GB ROM storage. The major difference is the uprated 5MP camera, and a lower price tag.

The Liquid Z3S also retains its dual-SIM capability, HSPA radio (21Mbps), microSD slot, Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n, microUSB, Bluetooth 3.0 and stereo FM radio. The new device also packs a big 1,500mAh battery.

Little Acer enhancements
What’s cool is the Acer Active Flip function that gives quick access to the home screen when the cover is flipped open. The screen automatically turns off when the cover is closed. The sturdy protective front cover is integrated into the removable back panel of the Z3S.

Like its predecessor, the Liquid Z3S comes with the handy Acer Quick Modes offering different UI based on user preference – Basic Mode, Senior Mode, Classic Mode and Keypad Mode. The different modes simplify navigation and also offer bigger icons for easy interaction.

The Acer Float Caller function is rather handy too. This function allows uninterrupted usage of your phone when there is an incoming call. The call interface floats over your current app to allow you to take/reject the call without having to leave your app.

In my brief hands-on experience with the compact device, I found it considerably well-built and feature-packed. Response and fluidity is more than adequate with an exterior that’s quite pleasing both to look at and to hold.

There’s little to complain if you consider its price of RM299 (which is RM100 cheaper than the Z3 it replaces). There is an exclusive pre-order promo for the Acer Liquid Z3S on storekini.com starting from 12 noon today (14 February 2014). All the pre-orders come with a free screen protector, free active flip cover and free in-store discount code for the next purchase. First 30 pre-orders will also receive a travel adapter. The Liquid Z3S is slated to ship in early March 2014.

I’ve got a little surprise for you too, since its Valentine’s Day and I’m all for spreading the love. I’ll be giving out one unit of Acer Liquid Z3S! You’ll be one of the first owners of the device in Malaysia! Stay tuned for the giveaway in the next post.
