WeChat continues its impressive growth in popularity worldwide, now surpassing WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Twitter, Skype and Instagram. The latest study done by GlobalWebIndex shows the China-made communications platform now sitting at fifth spot in the most used apps in the world.

According to data, WeChat is installed on 27% of the world’s smartphones, while Facebook Messenger, Skype and Twitter at 22% each; WhatsApp ranks ninth at 17%, and Instagram takes tenth place at 11%.

In the past few months, WeChat has hit 70 million registered users accounts outside of China, in addition to its more than 300 million registered user base in China under the brand name Weixin.

Global WeChat has just announced its latest 5.0 version for iPhone, adding online payment capability and feature enhancements.

WeChat is available as a free download on iOS, Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry and Symbian.
