iOS 4.2 Software Update Release Imminent

The much-anticipated iOS 4.2 unified software update for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch is set to be released today at 10am (Cupertino time). This will bring some snazzy new features to the devices including AirPrint, AirPlay and Find  My iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. For iPads, it finally puts the 10-inch device on par with the iPhone and iPod Touch – with multitasking and folders. Awesome!

AirPrint will make it super simple to print emails, docs and photos off your iPhone. Absolutely no drivers to install or configure, just tap and go!

AirPlay gives you the ability to stream digital media wirelessly from your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch to your Apple TV/AirPlay-enabled speakers. This is pretty cool, if you have an Apple TV, of course.

Find My iPhone isn’t new, but with the 4.2 update, the nifty utility (formerly a MobileMe only feature) helps you locate your missing device and protect its data. Best of all, it’s now free on any iPhone 4, iPad, or fourth-generation iPod touch running iOS 4.2.3. This is very cool. See a video of how it works here.

Other notable enhancements include:

  • iTunes TV Show Rentals (only applicable to US-based and foreign accounts, unfortunately, bah!)
  • Enhanced Mail
  • Search text in web pages via Safari
  • Notes with customisable fonts (yay!)
  • Reply to Calendar Invites
  • Keyboard enhancements
  • Accessibility enhancements (control VoiceOver using wireless keyboard, output to over 30 supported braille display devices)
  • Enhanced enterprise support (better security, device management)
  • New alerts and custom tones for messages!

Looks like a pretty solid update. Can’t wait!
