This is what 10x optical zoom on the Moto Z Play with Hasselblad True Zoom Moto Mods looks like

Hasselblad True Zoom

One of the most exciting things that was churned out by the Lenovo folks at IFA 2016 were the Moto Z range, coupled with Moto Mods, specifically the delicious Hasselblad True Zoom module. On its own, the Moto Z and Moto Z Play are already kick-ass smartphones from the get go. But snap in that Hasselblad mod, and things become extra special.

You see, the Hasselblad True Zoom has its own 13MP 1/2.3-inch CMOS BSI sensor. It boasts OIS (which is absolutely important) and the ability to shoot in RAW format. Snap this on the Moto Z and Moto Z Play, and the Hasselblad magic switches on automatically.

Thanks to its flawless industrial design and impeccable build (would you have expected anything else from Hasselblad?), it feels like a real point-and-shoot camera in the hands. Everything from the physical shutter button, zoom toggle and camera grip feels… just right.

Now, what’s truly special is its 10x optical zoom lens with a focal range of 4.5-45mm and an aperture range of f/3.5-6.5.

Hasselblad True Zoom

Hasselblad, nuff said

As you know, Hasselblad is a household name in photography, renowned for its medium format cameras, photographic equipment and image scanners. For over 70 years, Hasselblad has been the choice brand for pro photographers all over the world.

For Hasselblad to partner Moto on the Moto Mod is quite something. Sure, we’ve seen Huawei getting cosy with Leica with some outstanding results on the Huawei P9.

Before you ask: no, it doesn’t sport a Hasselblad lens. Just as the Huawei P9 doesn’t have a Leica-made lens. However, the entire camera experience – from software, hardware design is co-engineered and certified by Hasselblad.

I had a chance to play around with the Hasselblad True Zoom during the Lenovo Launch at IFA 2016, and come out impressed. Auto focus is pretty snappy, and the shutter quick too.
