Nokia, via HMD Global of course, marked its return to the phone game with a dash of nostalgia and a slew of mid-range devices. But you know and I know, that the one we crave is the flagship Nokia 8. And well, you’re in for a treat if you’re in Malaysia, because it’s finally going to breathe some hazy Malaysian air.
The top-of-the-line Nokia device will definitely get you excited, regardless if you’re a Nokia fan or not. Solid 2017 flagship device specs, premium build, what’s not to love?
Starting with a 5.3-inch Quad HD IPS display protected by Gorilla Glass 5, it trickles down to an octa-core Snapdragon 835 processor mated to 4GB of RAM and 64GB base storage. It’s a dual-SIM with support for micro-SD expansion, so fret not if you’ve taken a ton of photos and videos.
Speaking of which, it’s the first Nokia with a dual-camera setup, and yes, how can a flagship device today not have multiple rear or front cameras? Pfft.
So, the rear shooters are 13MP RGB + 13MP mono units equipped with f/2.0 aperture Zeiss optics. Wait a second while we enjoy that. Zeiss. They offer optical image stabilisation, phase detection autofocus, and dual LED flash. Aside from high-resolution photos, it also captures 4K (3840×2160) video.
Nokia claims the camera will produce some of the best low light photography in the industry. I’ll reserve my comments until I get a hands-on with the device tomorrow.
OK, moving on, the front-facing camera is a 13MP with a wide-angle lens.
And by the way, the Nokia 8 is capable of capturing a Bothie—a video or photo using the rear and front camera simultaneously. I can’t quite fathom the practical application for this, but hey, it’s new.
Another neat feature is what Nokia called OZO Audio—a sound technology that delivers an immersive 360-degree audio experience when you record video.
Next, the large 3,090mAh battery will charge up via USB Type-C, with support for Qualcomm Quick Charge.
The Nokia 8 will come with stock Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box and because it’s pure Android, it bloatware free. And, it will be one of the first devices to get Android Oreo when it’s available later part of the year.
The premium Nokia 8 does look good, featuring an all-aluminium unibody and coming in Polished Blue, Tempered Blue, Steel and Polished Copper colour options.
Pricing and availability
And the great thing is, it’s going to be one of the most affordable flagship devices on the market when it debuts. Thanks to a leak on Tuesday, the purported retail price of the device is MYR2,299.
I know, it’s surprising (or maybe not, given the strategy is to make a serious entry into the market), making the Nokia 8 a very compelling buy.
