Wiko is a fast-growing brand with a half a dozen fun, quirky Android-based smartphones in its portfolio. Right behind the flagship Highway Pure, Fever, Lenny and recently Robby, the French smartphone maker has rolled out another two – U Feel and U Feel Lite.
I first encountered the U Feel and U Feel Lite at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2016. Here’s what makes the U Feel look and feel special.
Looks good, feels great
The first thing you’ll love is the U Feel’s neo-retro looks – with a metal frame and sandstone back cover. The sandstone back cover not only looks good but gives you a firm, non-slip grip.
The U Feel has a classic candy bar design with rounded edges and beautiful 2.5D curved glass.
On the other hand, the U Feel Lite is dressed in a two-coloured metal body in various ‘edible’ colours – Slate, Chocolate and Rose Gold.
Both devices are thin, ergonomic and feel great in the hands.
On the front, they get an identical 5-inch HD display that pushes out close to 300PPI, and features On-Cell and CABC technologies. The combination of both technologies make for a thinner form factor and better responsiveness. It’s also smart enough to adjust brightness and contrast automatically so you’ll always get the best display regardless of ambient light conditions.
Let the fingers do the walking
It’s unprecedented that a device at this price point comes with a fingerprint sensor. And it’s snappy too, unlocking the device in no more than 0.48s. But wait, that’s not all you can do with your fingers. You see, U Feel lets you register up to five fingerprints (on either hand) and assign your prints for different actions.
Whether it’s to launch Facebook, call your mom, fire the camera or securing your private contents, U Feel and U Feel Lite will obey your every print.
Camera cool
Whether you like taking photos of panoramas, your cat or food (like me), the U Feel’s 13MP main snapper will please you, thanks to the Sony IMX258 sensor, 5P lens and blue optical filter. It has a surprisingly snappy shutter, and focus speeds are good. There’s a 240LM flash that’s ready to fire, just in case things get a little too dark for comfort.
Not to be outdone, the U Feel Lite packs an 8MP rear shooter with 120LM LED flash, with 0.5s fast autofocus.
What’s cool is that the camera comes with different shoot modes including HDR, Dual View and even a Professional mode for people who want more manual control.
On the front there’s a 5MP wide-angle selfie camera that always takes awesome selfies. Why? Because it has a front-facing LED flash.
Performance you can feel
You tend to forget that the U Feel and U Feel Lite are a mid-range devices, and priced under MYR700. That’s because they’re snappy, thanks to the 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek MTK6735 chip coupled with a whopping 3GB RAM (2GB RAM on the Lite). They come packed with 16GB of storage, and if you need more space for those beautiful selfies, there’s a microSD slot for further expansion (up to 64GB).
Both are dual-SIM devices supporting 4G LTE and run the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow with Wiko UI on top.
Wiko’s colourful user interface gives you also some useful bundled apps, with ability to fast launch your music and customization of your apps display.
Feel the value
The Wiko U Feel retails at an affordable MYR699 (incl. GST) and is available in Space Grey or Creamy. Meanwhile, the Wiko U Feel Lite is priced at an attractive MYR569 (inc. GST).
