OnePlus 2 “2016 Flagship Killer” is launching on 28 July

OnePlus 2

The OnePlus brand has got to be one of the most hyped brands in 2014. With its initial invite-only mechanism for online sales, it’s spurred a cult following globally. “Never Settle” being its mantra, it disrupted the industry with its high-spec and affordable prices.

Finally (better late than never), the big successor OnePlus 2 is coming. OnePlus is calling its latest device the “2016 Flagship Killer.” Ambitious? Indeed. For a brand that’s sold just 1.5 million devices last year, that’s quite a brag.

Nonetheless, it doesn’t come unwarranted. Powering the OnePlus 2 is an optimised, updated version of the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810. It remains to be seen how the supposedly improved chip fares and lets hope it doesn’t have the same heat and throttling issues as on the HTC One M9.

OnePlus 2

What’s a flagship killer without massive amount of RAM. The OnePlus 2 gets 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM, 64GB storage and a large 3,300Ah battery.

It will be one of the first phones to use a reversible Type C USB connector (the same standard seen on the new MacBook and Nokia N1 tablet).

According to soyacincau, the OnePlus 2 will sport a 5.5 QHD display, 13MP rear camera and a high-res 8MP front unit.

As you know, OnePlus has dropped Cyanogen that powered its first product. The new OxygenOS, based on Android 5.0 Lollipop will power the OnePlus 2. According to OnePlus, the new device will have ‘Android M features’ that aren’t available on other smartphones. No details about these yet.

OnePlus has hinted that the new device will not exceed US$450 (RM1,700) despite an increase over the previous generation. If you can recall, OnePlus partnered with an telco for the first time globally – with Maxis, offering the OnePlus One for RM1,199.

The OnePlus 2 will launch globally tomorrow, 28 July at 10AM (+8:00GMT). If you’ve have a cardboard VR unit (OnePlus offered one for free too), you’ll be able to catch the launch in VR, in the comfort of your home. This is the first time a product keynote launch is made available in virtual reality.

So, a 2016 Flagship Killer that promises much. But will it deliver?

Hint: Never Settle.
