The Redmi is back, and with a fresh new look too. After launching in China early January, the Redmi Note 7 is now in Malaysia, with a surprise Redmi 7 in tow. Now a sub-brand under Xiaomi (yes much like Pocophone), the bang-for-buck Redmi line continues Xiaomi’s promise of great products with “honest pricing.”
And the Redmi series is hard to fault. The value smartphone series has single-handedly built Xiaomi’s cult-like status today.
Redmi Note 7
The Redmi Note 7 packs even better hardware, more premium build, spot-on pricing and now with longer warranty.
It sports a 6.3-inch FHD+ Dot Display—Xiaomi’s dew drop notch. The device is reassuringly protected on both sides with Gorilla Glass 5 and the back features a glossy gradient treatment. It does look good, and it’s a step up from its predecessors.
Under the hood the Redmi Note 7 uses the powerful but efficient Snapdragon 660AIE chipset, coupled with up to 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Sadly, Malaysia will not get the 6GB RAM variant.
Storage is expandable vi microSD via a hybrid dual-SIM tray.
In the optics department, the phone packs a 48MP f/1.8 main camera that uses Samsung’s GM1 ISOCELL sensor, coupled with a secondary 5MP shooter for depth of field effects. It has EIS and AI scene detection as well as dual-LED flash. The main sensor uses 4-in-1 Super Pixel (1.6 micron pixels) technology to produce better exposed images, even in low light conditions.
On the front, it gets a 13MP selfie shooter with AI Beautification features.
The Redmi Note 7 comes with a 4,000mAh battery that charges via USB Type-C. It supports Quick Charge 4 but Redmi is only bundling a standard 10W charger in the box.
Redmi has retained the much-loved 3.5mm headphone jack and infrared blaster on its latest device.
What’s interesting is that the Redmi Note 7 is covered by an 18-month warranty instead of the regular 12-month duration. More piece of mind.
Redmi 7
The Redmi 7 is the slightly more compact sibling rocking a 6.26-inch Dot Drop display pushing HD+ resolution and protected by Gorilla Glass.
It sports an appealing, if fingerprint-attracting gradient design back cover. This doesn’t look like a MYR500 device, that’s for sure.
Like the bigger Note 7, it retains the headphone jack and infrared blaster and also packs a hybrid dual-SIM slot.
It gets a 12MP f/2.2 + 2MP AI dual-camera system with a 1.25 micron pixel size. On the front is an 8 P f/2.0 selfie shooter.
The phone uses a best-in-class Snapdragon 632 processor mated to up to 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage.
The compact device also squeezes in a massive 4,000mAh battery that Xiaomi claims will give you up to 412 hours of standby time and 15 hours of video playback among other things. It charges up via microUSB.
