Two giants in storage solutions – WD, a Western Digital company and SanDisk Corporation, announced a collaboration to produce hybrid storage devices based on flash memory technology from SanDisk and hard drive technology from WD.

SanDisk supplies SanDisk iSSD storage device for the WD Black solid state hybrid drive (SSHD), the world’s thinnest 2.5-inch SSHD solution. WD Black uses both WD hybrid technology and industry standard SATA IO technology.

The SanDisk iSSD delivers a balance of performance, low power consumption, cost, reliability and a compact form factor to WD Black, which meets consumers demand for speed, data throughput and responsiveness, in a ultra-slim package. The SanDisk iSSD is built on 19nm process technology, the world’s smallest and most advanced semiconductor manufacturing process.

WD Black’s ultra-slim profile is well-suited to manufacturer demands for slimmer devices, perfect for the thinnest of notebooks. Its 5mm profile offers 500GB capacity, utilising almost 50% less volume than a standard notebook hard drive (9.5mm).

The WD Black 5mm SSHDs are shipping to OEMs. WD is also currently shipping to OEMs ultra-slim, 7mm and 9.5mm SSHDs for portable devices.
