Vivo V5 packs 20MP front camera for perfect selfies

This selfie-taking business is really getting serious. Self-professed “Selfie Expert” OPPO may have just met it match. Its cousin vivo has just unleashed the vivo V5, a serious selfie-centric entry that rocks a 20MP front camera. You read that right, a 20MP front camera.

The vivo V5 succeeds the previous V3 series (the V3 Max is awesome, btw) that came with ‘only’ an 8MP front shooter.

Off the bat, the V5 bears an uncanny resemblance to current selfie champions — the OPPO F1s and F1 Plus. From its unibody metal exterior to the 5.5-inch HD IPS display. Under the hood, it’s mid-tier at best, sporting a 64-bit MediaTek MT6750 CPU though coupled with a generous 4GB RAM and 32GB of storage.

There’s microSD, and you’ll probably need it for all the high resolution selfies you’re going to be taking.

Talking about selfies, the whopper of a front camera is a Sony-sourced IMX376 20MP module with f/2.0 lens. It comes with a soft light flash for more natural auxiliary illumination. There’s a new Face Beauty Mode 6.0 software that will make even the men look pretty. NO kidding.

Round back, there’s a more conventional 13MP rear camera with PDAF.

The device is a dual-SIM with support for multi-band 4G LTE.

The 3,000mAh battery should give you hours of selfie pleasure, charging through a conventional micro-USB port. There’s none of the USB C nor fast charging business, unfortunately.

Like the v3 Max, it also boasts an AK4376 HiFi DAC and this will mean some indulgent listening pleasure. If the v3 Max is any indication, audio quality is going to rock.

It runs Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with Funtouch 2.6 OS on top.

Pricing and availability

The vivo V5 retails for MYR1,299 and comes in two colours – Gold and Rose Gold.
