Pocket Wi-Fi router rental service isn’t entirely new in Malaysia. Providers like Visondata and Wiyo have been operating for several years, offering affordable internet connectivity overseas. Now there’s a new player in town – Travel Recommends – with even more enticing rates, from just MYR15/day.
For the uninitiated, a pocket Wi-Fi router (or mobile Wi-Fi or Mi-Fi for short) is a device that connects to cellular or Wi-Fi connection, then provides you and other users internet connectivity.
This means, you don’t have to depend on your own cellular connection. When you’re overseas, that also means, no expensive roaming charges.
Sharing is caring
Plus, you’ll be able to share your unlimited data connection with up to eight devices. So, you can share it with your whole family, or your party of friends when happening. No one needs to be disconnected, and there’s no need to scramble for Wi-Fi hotspots around.
Depending on the country you’re visiting, rates can be as low as MYR15/day, with an unlimited, unthrottled 3G/4G connection.
Travel Recommends lets you rent its pocket Wi-Fi router from its booth at KLIA, or you can arrange for it to be couriered to you.
Mobile internet in a few steps
It is recommended that you reserve a unit online at www.travelrecommends.com, at least five working days before your departure date.
A refundable deposit of MYR200 via bank transfer is required for the reservation.
Once you’re back from your trip, simply return to Wi-Fi router at TR’s KLIA booth, or get it picked up by courier.
When you reserve the pocket Wi-Fi, you’ll get the device, device holder pouch, charging cable and travel adapter. A powerbank can be rented separately for a small fee (free for Europe rentals).

Initial thoughts
I’m interested to see how well this works, and from initial impressions the rates look mighty attractive. If anyone of you is heading to Japan, this would be a perfect, affordable option.
In terms of rental/return process, it looks pretty straightforward and should be hassle-free.
Can’t wait to give this a test run soon.
