Aluminium OS: Why Google’s “Desktop Android” is a Productivity Sandbox

Vernon — Fri, 15 May 2026 13:58:03 +0000

TL;DR: Aluminium OS (internally known as ALOS) is Google’s new Android-based desktop operating system designed for Googlebook laptops. While it offers native Android app support and AI features like Magic Pointer, it lacks the professional-grade file system and application ecosystem of macOS Tahoe. Technical analysis shows that despite its desktop-like interface, Aluminium OS remains limited […]

TL;DR / At a Glance: The Googlebook is Google’s new premium laptop platform running Aluminium OS (a desktop-optimised version of Android). Despite hardware features like the Glow Bar and AI tools like Magic Pointer, it struggles to justify its premium pricing against the MacBook Neo. Don’t ditch your old Mac, turn it into a Chromebook

Vernon — Sat, 09 Jul 2022 14:43:47 +0000

I’ve got a couple of old Macs lying around the home — from a 13-inch 2009 MacBook Pro to a 15-inch 2012 MacBook Pro (the best MBP ever, by the way). They were both workhorses back in the day but now obsoleted due to their aged hardware. They still run decently well of course, just […]

Grab’s Delivery Doodles feature lets kids draw their food orders

Vernon — Mon, 25 May 2020 10:22:44 +0000

Doodles that turn into noodles? That’s got to be some kind of magic, right? Involves a fairy godmother or a purple genie? Well, if you can imagine Google’s AI in some sort of magician’s hat made up of ones and zeroes, perhaps. Grab’s new Delivery Doodles feature uses AI to turn any kid’s doodles of […]

Google loses sweet tooth, Android Q is Android 10

Vernon — Thu, 22 Aug 2019 00:34:13 +0000

If you were making guesses of what Android Q stands for, Google has announced that it’s dropping its dessert-themed naming convention for its mobile OS. Android Q is, disappointingly, just plain Android 10. After more than a decade of diabetic-inducing names, Google has decided to go clean, but it isn’t without good reason. In a […]

Pixel C disappears from Google Store

Vernon — Fri, 29 Dec 2017 08:28:06 +0000

Launched in 2015, Google’s Pixel C was an intriguing, if experimental, tablet that was supposed to have run ChromeOS. Sold at a whopping USD599/MYR2,430, it ended up being an Android tablet in the end, albeit a very good one. Two years on, Google has quietly pulled it from the Google Store. The Pixel C was […]
