Sunway’s advanced smart parking system with multi-cashless payment is coming

Sunway Smart Parking

Parking tickets, scrambling for spare change and queues will soon be a thing of the past. Sunway today previewed Sunway Smart Parking at its flagship mall—Sunway Pyramid—featuring the largest fully integrated license plate recognition system with support for multiple cashless payment options.

The cashless and ticketless parking solution supports major e-wallet partners including GrabPay, Boost, WeChat Pay, Alipay, Touch ‘n Go eWallet, Maybank QRPay as well as credit partners MasterCard, Visa, American Express, JCB, UnionPay, and MyDebit. This is possible through a partnership with ManagePay Systems (“MPay”), a provider of end-to-end electronic payment solutions. http://www.managepay.com/managepay/

Sunway says the initiative is part of the group’s digitalisation journey—harnessing technology to enhance customer experience for its customers. In addition, by going paperless and cashless, it will help reduce the carbon footprint of the mall and subsequently the rest of the group’s properties. This is in line with Sunway’s commitment to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

The Sunway Smart Parking solution will be deployed within Sunway City, starting with Sunway Pyramid, Sunway Hotels and Menara Sunway. This will cover over 10,000 parking bays around the development.

Currently online and in testing by season parkers and internal staff, the service is expected to be rolled out to the public in Q1 2020.

According to HC Chan, chief executive officer of Sunway Malls & Theme Parks, the group spent USD1 million (~MYR4.1 million) to acquire the LPR technology from JieShun, a solutions provider from Shenzhen, China. JieShun is a leader in LPR technology, having deployed over 100,000 parking sites across China and globally.

How does Sunway Smart Parking work?

To get started with Sunway Smart Parking, all you need to do is to register your car plate number through the Sunway Parking portal (also available on iOS and Android). Once you’ve registered, simply attach your car plate to a participating e-wallet of your choice to make a payment.

Once you’ve registered your car plate, when you enter Sunway properties, in this case Sunway Pyramid, your car plates will be scanned by the LPR system. This happens within seconds and the parking boom gate will automatically lift for you to enter.

Alternatively, for shoppers who either do no have e-wallets or internet access, they can pay with the conventional Touch ‘n Go card or through the auto payment system (APS). The APS machines accept cash as well as credit/debit cards.

Shoppers who register their car plate numbers during the pre-registration period will get a chance to enjoy a one-time free parking when the system goes online for the public next year.

Will there still be parking tickets in the future?

Sunway said that the new system will run alongside the existing one for one or two more years before the old one is eventually phased out.

The LPR system currently has an accuracy of 95 percent, and the group hopes to achieve 99.7 percent accuracy in time to come.
