It has been confirmed by Game Designer, David Kim that there will be no local network support for Starcraft 2’s expansion. This announcement was made during Gamescom, Cologne.

According to PC Gamer, Kim wanted Starcraft 2 to be an actual online game that builds around the ladder system and achievements. Other than the sad connectivity news, HOTS will be twenty missions long and few new units will be introduced for each race.
On a personal note, I always believed LAN to be a better feature than most matchmaking systems. I’ve seen a fair share of screw ups on SCII tournaments caused by Battle.net itself. Not saying that I am being skeptical about having no LAN at all but I always find it as an added advantage to have LAN support in your gameplay. Just my two cents.
