Sign of Platform Maturity: Fart Apps – iOS vs Android

If the amount of fart apps is any indication of maturity of a platform, then Google‘s OS has certainly shown Apple’s iOS who’s boss when it comes to application growth. Android has overtaken iOS in sheer number of fart apps available in the market. Now that I’ve got your attention – On a serious note though, Android has grown exponentially in sheer number of applications.

In less than 2 years, Android has ballooned from a mere 5,000 applications to 250,000 today. iOS of course, has a distant lead of 350,000, although this may see much change over the next year or two. Numbers may not be as important as for the ecosystem, as a recent survey of developers reveals. A developer commented that Android’s market share may be illusionary, due to fragmentation and the fact that the Google OS development environment is a mess.

While 71% of respondents said they would develop for Android as opposed to 62% for iOS, survey results suggest that Android developers are finding the ecosystem perilous. Several key factors include device fragmentation, store fragmentation (devs prefer a singular, unified store), ease of development and monetization.

So developers – Android or iOS? Being the two biggest mobile platforms (iOS being the most profitable, though), in this day and age, it probably pays to be multi-platform, multi-device.

On the brighter side of things, at least there’s a Bieber fart app. Enjoy.
