Samsung Electronics Co. and Google Inc. have agreed to delay the public announcement of a new mobile-phone product following the death of Apple Inc.’s former chief executive, Steve Jobs, the Seoul-based electronics giant said Saturday.

“We believe this is not the right time to announce a new product as the world expresses tribute to Steve Jobs’s passing,” said Samsung’s spokeswoman Chenny Kim.

Samsung, the world’s second-largest handset vendor after Nokia Corp., was set to reveal the new mobile phone to the public during Samsung Mobile UNPACKED event in San Diego on Oct. 11 (Kuala Lumpur:- Wednesday, 12 October 2011, 02:30 AM). The new date and the venue for the delayed announcement have yet to be decided.

Samsung announced that it expects to rack up record profits from mobile sales. Analysts think that it could have passed Apple in the July-September period for the total number of smartphone handsets shipped around the world. Samsung sold 19 million smartphones in the second quarter, and analysts expect shipments to have risen to more than 28m units in the third quarter, helping it towards its target for the year of 60m units. Sales numbers have been boosted by the runaway success of the Samsung Galaxy S II, which sold 10 million units globally to date.

The mobile world is expecting a big unveiling of the Nexus Galaxy/Prime, the first Android phone to feature the latest Google Android OS – Ice Cream Sandwich. The superphone is believed to be powered by a TI OMAP 4460 dual-core Cortex A9 processor clocked at 1.2GHz, backed by 1GB of RAM at the core. The phone is said to have a 4.65-inch curved glass screen with 720p resolution. It will include 32GB of built-in storage, a 5MP rear-facing camera, 1.3MP front-facing camera and can record video in 1080p HD. The phone will also be LTE/HSPA 4G enabled and feature Near Field Communication (NFC) technology.
