Samsung Galaxy A80 available in Malaysia

Samsung’s first ever smartphone with a rotating triple camera has finally landed in Malaysia. Ushering the “Era of Live,” the flagship of the A series—the Galaxy A80 brings flagship-level features and a distinctive design.

Making a debut in April, the Galaxy A80 is the latest addition to the expansive premium mid-range Galaxy A family. It’s undoubtedly the coolest and most unique to date, boasting an all-screen notchless display, and a fancy motorised rotating camera.

The “New Infinity Display” is a masssive 6.7-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display (1080×2400) with all-round super slim bezels.

Similar to what OPPO did with the original N3 and ASUS’ ZenFone 6, the Galaxy A80 features a rotating camera coupled with a sliding mechanism. When you fire up the camera app, the back panel that houses the triple-camera module slides up. In selfie mode, the camera module rotates towards you. Technically, there’s no selfie camera per se, which is an advantage since it uses the full capabilties of the main camera. The entire process happens wihin a second or two.

The only gripe is that there’s no face authentication and that might be a deal-breaker for some. It does however feature an on-screen fingerprint sensor.

The camera system, by the way, is a triple camera array with a 48MP f/2.0 wide-angle camera, 8MP f/2.2 123-degree ultra-wide-lens camera and a 3D Depth (TOF) camera. The 3D Depth camera enables Live Focus Video mode.

Under the hood, the device runs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G chipset, coupled with 8GB of RAM and a generous 128GB of onboard storage. For those expecting some form of storage expansion, you’ll be disappointed as there’s no microSD support.

A couple of other things that the phone lacks are stereo speakers and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

What’s good is the fairly large 3,700mAh battery that supporrts 25W fast-charging via USB-C.

The phone runs Android 9.0 Pie with One UI on top.
