Discovering deals using geo-location on your mobile isn’t something new. Digital coupons/vouchers, QR codes, NFC tags, you name them, they exist. One new player, however, has re-imagined the way people easily discover restaurant deals around them. Say hello to Pirq.

Pirq started in 2011 in the US, spawned by the love of trying new restaurants (sounds a lot like me, doesn’t it?). What they’re doing differently though is that they’ve created an entirely new, carefully curated, relevant source of information for food lovers around the world.

It’s great for users, and great for restaurants too.

What’s also cool about Pirq, at least in the US currently, is that they make a donation to help feed the hungry. With Pirq, everyone wins – the users, restaurants, community and people in need.

Pirq raised $1.2 million in a second round of funding to launch this service. Pirq became very well known after announcing a partnership with Apple to bring exclusive restaurant deals to all of its employees in Silicon Valley. Cool way to create some buzz!

Since its introduction, Pirq has won some industry accolades – “App of the Year” nominee by TechFlash and recognised as “Seattle’s Hottest Company” by Lead411. Oh and by the way, Pirq’s CEO James Sun was a finalist in Donald Trump’s The Apprentice!

For merchants, Pirq makes it really affordable to be part of the entire eco-system. At a low monthly subscription fee, each merchant gets an Android tablet to place on their counter. Consumers scan a bar code using Pirq on their iOS or Android phone, or send a simple text message to a short code on screen.

Piece of cake. Ok, make it two.

Using Pirq is easy. Simply download the app, register your account using your email address, and fire it up. Or register using your Facebook account. Easy peasy. Pirq will locate the best deals near you. When you’re at the restaurant curated by Pirq, click “Redeem” to scan the Tag using the Pirq app, or SMS to the short code displayed on the Android smart device at the venue. Claim and enjoy your reward!

No fuss, no hassle. It’s really easy to redeem, without having to do any printing of any sort.

In Malaysia, the growing number of participating brands include Kenny Rogers Roasters, Flying Chillies, Absolute Thai, Shinjuku Japanese restaurant, and more.
