OPPO F1s: Latest “Selfie Expert” hits selfie-loving Malaysian market

After the success of the first two “Selfie Expert” photography-focused smartphones – the OPPO F1 and F1 Plus, OPPO is bringing another to selfie-loving Malaysians. The OPPO F1s is an evolution of its predecessors, packing a whopping 16MP front camera and complemented by OPPO’s Beautify 4.0 camera software.

The rise of OPPO

Malaysia is a key market for the China phone maker, and as remarked by OPPO Malaysia CEO, William Fang at the OPPO F1s official launch earlier today. Demand for smartphones here remains robust thanks to a resilient economy and high mobile internet penetration. Malaysia recorded strong double digit growth in revenue over the last two years.

It’s no surprise that OPPO plans to invest approximately MYR42 million in terms of capital expenditure within next one year. This investment will facilitate the expansion of the brand’s presence in Malaysia and increase its sales points to 4,000 this year. Currently, OPPO has 70 concept stores and 14 customer service centers nationwide.

OPPO has moved swiftly up the ranks as a global smartphone player, now an impressive fourth position based on global sales behind Samsung, Apple and Huawei.

Popular actress, model and TV host Nora Danish who calls herself “Ms OPPO”, as you know is the OPPO F1’s official Selfie Ambassador. The Selfie Expert was present during the launch to demonstrate the F1s’ new selfie-centric features including beauty selfie, palm selfie and panorama selfie.

What’s awesome about the OPPO F1s

Design-wise the F1s retains the sleek, curvy looks from the F1 and F1 Plus. It’s premium-looking, with an aluminum unibody, measuring just 7.38mm in profile. Its 5.5-inch 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 4 screen is neatly curved to give it that ultra-smooth look and feel. It comes in two colour options: Gold and Rose Gold.

The display unfortunately, is only a HD 5.5-incher, which may disappoint some quarters.

Nevertheless, it has other virtues. For one, it has a fingerprint scanner built into the home button, and it’s superfast. It scans and unlocks in a mere 0.22s, easily one of the fastest fingerprint scanners in its price segment.

Under the hood, the F1s packs an octa-core MediaTek MT6750 processor, complemented with 3GB of RAM. For storage, it rocks 32GB onboard.

What’s really cool is that it features an all-new triple-slot SIM tray that supports two nano 4G SIM cards and a microSD card (expandable to up to 128GB).

The most affordable Selfie Expert

The F1s lives up to its “Selfie Expert” title with a pair of impressive cameras. On the front, it rocks a 16MP selfie camera with a large f/2.0 aperture. The large 1/3.1-inch sensor delivers high dynamic range and reduced noise, especially in low light environments. The camera also includes an upgraded Screen Flash function to ensure beautiful, well-lit selfies every single time.

The rear shooter is a 13MP 1/3-inch BSI unit with a f/2.2 aperture lens. It features PDAF for quick accurate focusing and is the similar unit as one found on the F1 Plus.

Both cameras offer Beautify 4.0, with seven levels of beautification and two skin tone modes. OPPO says it has improved beautification algorithms based on user feedback.

New camera features include Selfie Panorama and Palm Selfie. There’s also an array of nine built-in filters and watermarks as well as a host of plugins including an upgrade Expert Mode, Double Exposure, Time Lapse and GIF.

Finally, the F1s packs a large 3,075mAh battery which should ensure all-day use (including selfies!). This is aided but ColorOS 3.0 which boasts state-of-the-art power-saving optimisations.

Compared to its predecessor, ColorOS 3.0 is 30% quicker as well as more power efficient.

Pricing and availability

The OPPO F1s is priced at MYR1,198 (incl. GST) and is available for pre-order from 10-19 August 2016. It will be available at all OPPO sale points nationwide from 20 August onwards.
