Ookyo delivers 1GB data surprise to subscribers

ookyo 1GB data upgrade

I’m currently roaming in Japan via a social pass with ookyo and just received a pleasant surprise via the ookyo app. I’ve been informed that my monthly high-speed data has been upgraded from the original 3GB to 4GB. The change will be reflected in the next renew. Best nye!

For those who are not aware or wondering what this oddly named telco is, it’s a unique “hybrid” mobile service powered by Maxis 4G. It’s a fully digital service that can only be subscribed via the web, and you’ll need a credit or debit card for auto-renewal.

If you’re thinking, hey, that sounds familiar. Well, you’re kind of right. Webe (now unifi, doh) had the makings of an interesting service, but unfortunately, haven’t quite been the best telco experience both in terms of user experience and network performance. I should know, I was a customer. Yes, was.

Anyway, back to ookyo. It’s a mobile service designed for people who love Snapchat, Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, Spotify, WeChat, smule and everything else that keep people glued to their 6-inchers.

You can read all about it here, but I’ll give you a quick refresh.

The base plan costs MYR30 per month, and that will now give you 4GB of high-speed internet data, and unlimited basic internet. Calls are charged at MYR0.30 per minute and MYR0.15 for each SMS.

It comes with a 30-day validity, and auto-renewal is done via MaxisPay and/or debit/credit cards.

Here’s where it gets interesting. Depending on where your interests are skewed, you can pick an Entertainment Pack or Social Pack. These packs enables you unlimited access to your favourite apps, without using up your main high-speed data quota.

The entertainment pack covers apps like Spotify, Smule, Musically, BIGO Live, 9GAG and more. Social Pack on the other hand covers Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Snapchat and others social apps.

Note this does not cover subscriptions to premium subscriptions of the individuals apps. Those you’ll have to pay separately.

The upgrade to 4GB data is much welcomed, but to be frank, I’ve hardly used more than 3GB thanks to the Social Pack I subscribe to.

The other awesome thing about ookyo is that each time you reload, you’ll receive credit for the Google Play Store. You can use this to buy apps in the store.

At the moment, ookyo only works on Android devices.
