HMD Global today launched a duo of new devices – the Nokia 6.1 Plus and Nokia 5.1 Plus in Malaysia, in the presence of the Ambassador of Finland to Malaysia, His Excellency Petri Phakka. The new devices boast signature Nokia design and build, performance and affordable price points.
Nokia 6.1 Plus
The Nokia 6.1 Plus (known as the X6 in China) was first announced in July 2018. It sports a 5.8-inch FHD+ LCD display (1080×2280) with a 19:9 screen aspect ratio. While Nokia has embraced the notch, it has kept it minimal. There are tiny bezels on the side and a slight chin, but otherwise it’s pretty “edge-to-edge.”
A hallmark of the brand, the Nokia 6.1 Plus features impressive premium build – a beautiful blend of glass and aluminium.
The device is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 chipset mated to 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. There’s microSD expansion via a hybrid SIM tray if you need to add more (up to 400GB).
In terms of optics, it packs a 16MP f/2.0 + 5MP f/2.2 dual-camera setup on the rear and a 16MP f/2.0 selfie-shooter. The camera has digital image stabilisation but limited to video recording.
With a secondary depth camera on the rear, you know it’s good for one thing – bokehlicious photos.
The dual-SIM device packs a 3,060mAh battery that supports Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging via USB Type-C.
Out-of-the-box, the Nokia 6.1 Plus runs stock Android 8.1 Plus (Android One) and is Android Pie-ready.
The Nokia 6.1 Plus is available in Gloss Black, Gloss White and Gloss Midnight Blue colour options.
Nokia 5.1 Plus
At first glance, the Nokia 5.1 Plus (known as the X5 in China) looks almost identical to the Nokia 6.1 Plus. In terms of build material, expectedly, it’s down a notch, considering its lower price point. That’s not to say it doesn’t have the signature premium build of Nokia devices though. Its plastic frame is wrapped in glass on both sides and the body houses a 5.8-inch HD+ display (720×1520) with a 19:9 screen aspect ratio.
Under the hood, it’s powered by the MediaTek Helio P60 chip with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. It’s unlear if HMD Global will also offer the 4GB RAM + 64GB of storage version, but perhaps later down the line. It features a hybrid SIM tray that supports nano-SIMs and microSD storage expansion of up to 400GB.
In the camera department, the device boasts a 13MP f/2.0 + 5MP dual-camera setup on the rear enhanced with AI features like bokeh blur.
On the front, the 8MP f/2.2 front camera offers Portrait Lighting.
The dual-SIM device packs a 3,060mAh battery that supports 5V/2A fast-charging.
Like the Nokia 6.1 Plus, the Nokia 5.1 Plus runs Android One, meaning it runs stock Android 8.1 Oreo out-of-the-box.
The Nokia 5.1 Plus is available in Gloss Black, Gloss White and Gloss Midnight Blue colour options.
Pricing and availability
The Nokia 6.1 Plus is available today at all authorised Nokia stores and retailers at a price of MYR1,149.
For the first 2,500 units, the device will be bundled with a free action camera, screen protector and silicone case and will come in an exclusive box.
The Nokia 5.1 Plus will be available in mid-October and the official price will be revealed later.
