Lenovo brings full-screen slider phone to the masses

Lenovo Z5 Pro

All of a sudden, there’s trend for slider phones, which is a direct snowball effect from the pursuit of the ultimate all-screen experience. Not satisfied with simply being near bezel-less and notch-less, we’ve seen the likes of the sexy OPPO Find X, pop-up camera marvel Vivo NEX and recently the Mi MIX 3 and honor Magic 2 pushing the envelope in what’s possible. But wait, how about achieving all that but making it ultra-affordable?

Hello, Lenovo Z5 Pro.

But first, let’s talk about the Lenovo Z5. When Lenovo released a teaser sketch of what appeared to be a truly notch-less, all-screen phone – the Z5 – the world awaited in awe and excitement.

Unfortunately, the Z5 turned out to be a disappointment with many crying foul over the misleading teaser sketch. The real phone ended up having a notch, with an overall design a mish-mash of several leading phones.

Now back to the Z5 Pro. Finally the day has come. The Z5 Pro shows a closer resemblance to the sketch than its earlier rendition. Just launched in China, the device sports a 6.39-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED 19.5:9 screen aspect ratio display with super narrow 2.07mm bezels. This delivers 95.06 percent screen-to-body ratio which makes it the highest to date.

There’s a manual slider design, similar to the Mi MIX 3, and the module houses a 16MP f/2.2 front camera, earpiece and 8MP IR face unlock camera. On the back is a dual-camera array consisting of a 16MP f/1.8 lens with a Sony IMX519 sensor + 24MP f/1.8 Sony IMX576 sensor.

That’s not the end of its talents, there’s also an in-display fingerprint sensor to boot.

Under the hood, the smartphone is powered by the mid-range Snapdragon 710 chipset, bundled with 6GB of RAM and up to 128GB of storage.

It features Dolby Atmos and its 3350mAh battery charges up via USB Type-C.

The dual-SIM device runs Android 8.1 Oreo with ZUI 10.

Pricing and availability

The Lenovo Z5 Pro comes in Black and is priced at CNY1998 (USD287) for the 6GB RAM + 64GB storage model, while the 128GB version costs CNY2298 (USD330).

The device will go on sale in China from 11 November.
