Apple’s decision to cut pricing of the iPhone by USD200 recently, has not gone down well with early adopters who paid full price for their iPhones. Owners are crying foul at Apple for what seems to be a markdown for the holiday season. Apple has received plenty of flak for this move, prompting CEO Steve Jobs to step in with an open letter to all iPhone users.

First, I am sure that we are making the correct decision to lower the price of the 8GB iPhone from $599 to $399, and that now is the right time to do it. iPhone is a breakthrough product, and we have the chance to ‘go for it’ this holiday season. iPhone is so far ahead of the competition, and now it will be affordable by even more customers. It benefits both Apple and every iPhone user to get as many new customers as possible in the iPhone ‘tent’. We strongly believe the $399 price will help us do just that this holiday season.

Reiterating that the technology road is bumpy and constantly changing, Steve stressed that even though they are aggresively going after new customers with lower prices to expand the iPhone circle, Apple needs to also take care of early adopters and existing customers who trust Apple products.

Steve goes on to offer iPhone customers who purchased from Apple or AT&T a USD100 store credit towards purchase of any product at Apple Retail Stores or Apple Online Store. Details will be announced on the Apple website next week.

Thanks Steve and Apple for doing the right thing.
