Instagram is giving up on vertical videos

IGTV landscape videos

If you’ve been resisting, nauseating over vertical videos, it’s time to breathe a sigh of relief. Instagram, who has been evangelising vertical videos on mobile devices, today revealed that the app will support landscape format videos (the right orientation) on IGTV.

Yes, you no longer have to shoot in vertical format, or flip your landscape videos, or crop them in IGTV. Both orientations are now supported.

<Insert sigh of relief>

“We realize this is an evolution from where IGTV started — we believe it’s the right change for viewers and creators,” the company says in a blog post. “In many ways, opening IGTV to more than just vertical videos is similar to when we opened Instagram to more than just square photos in 2015. It enabled creativity to flourish and engagement to rise — and we believe the same will happen again with IGTV.”

It’s another way of saying—right, the vertical thing isn’t working guys. Let’s do it the right way.

On the flip side, the vertical video format on IGTV was the distinguishing feature for the platform against the likes of YouTube. The vertical format has sparked some creative storytelling too, but looks like not everyone’s convinced or embraced it.

It’s important to note that IGTV doesn’t have a built-in ad platform, unlike YouTube, so creators can’t make money off the platform. That said, it’s highly likely Instagram has something up its sleeve in the future.

So, what do you think? Are you relieved that landscape videos are now supported on IGTV?
