The HTC U11 sees red

HTC U11 Solar Red

The world’s first squeezable smartphone is ready to paint the town red. The HTC U11 is now available in stunning Solar Red, joining its “blingy” sibings Amazing Silver, Brilliant Black and Sapphire Blue. The new colour variant comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

Malaysia is the second country after Taiwan amongst Southeast Asian countries to get the Solar Red variant. It’s apparently the most sought-after colour of the HTC U11 globally.

Like the other colours, the Solar Red gives off unique hues depending on the light and angles that you’re looking at. This is thanks to HTC’s Liquid Surface design.

Different colours are incorporated into layers of glass to reflect hints of various colours. Certainly not your average colour or material treatment.

HTC Edge Sense

What also makes it unique is the HTC Edge Sense function. Squeeze the bottom sides of the phone to launch your favourite apps like the camera, or turn the flashlight on or off.

Personally, I’m still unconvinced that it’s no more than a gimmick, but hey, to each his own.

Having said that, the HTC U11 is a damn good phone. One of the best, if not the best the Taiwanese smartphone maker has done.

Performance is rock solid thanks to the top-of-the-line Snapdragon 835 processor, whopping 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. It boasts a 5.5-inch Quad HD display, HTC’s best display yet.

There’s also new HTC BoomSound Hi-Fi Edition speakers coupled with enhanced HTC USonic and fancy Acoustic Focus technology, that will appeal to audiophiles.

Another aspect it excels in: camera. The HTC U11 scored a remarkable 90 points in DxOMark mobile tests for both photo and video. This beats the highly-rated Galaxy S8, iPhone 7 Plus and Huawei P10.

The rear shooter is, by the way, a 12MP 1 /2.55-inch sensor with a superfast f/1.75 lens coupled with dual-PDAF autofocus. On the front, it boasts a 16MP Ultra Pixel selfie camera with HDR Boost and noise reduction. Impressive.

There’s plenty more to love including the barrage of digital assistants HTC is including in its flagship device. Go crazy – HTC Sense Companion, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. In China at least, there’s also Duer AI Assistant: Powered by Baidu DuerOS.

Pricing and availability

The HTC U11 in Solar Red is available now at a retail price of MYR3,099.
