HP Slate 6 VoiceTab slated for Malaysian release, redONE first

RedONE Mobile Sdn Bhd (“redONE”), award-winning mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) is all set to promote the newly-launched HP Slate6 VoiceTab phablet in Malaysia. The 6-inch device retails for just RM999, but with a redONe RM58 mobile plan buyers get a total of RM120 rebate over the next 12 months.

Formerly REDTone Mobile Sdn Bhd, redONE aims to strengthen its footing in the telecommunications market, having completed its rebranding exercise. The infant brand grew to 100,000 subscribers in the first 12 months of 2013, and doubled that number in a fraction of the time, in March 2014.

The explosive growth of the startup and its quality of service caught the eye of the industry and it was crowned “MVNO Service Provider of the Year” at the 2014 Frost & Sullivan Malaysia’s Excellence Awards.

HP’s careful re-entry into mobile

The new HP Slate6 VoiceTab, designed in Asia marks HP’s return to the mobile device market, to meet the demands of the new generation of mobile consumers in the Asia Pacific and Japan.

While hardly a flagship based on its specs, the Slate6 is a careful step into very competitive waters, especially in the mid-level phone segment. This was also a key reason why HP chose redONE as its strategic partner and to launch the device redONE-first, reaching a niche market rather than en masse.

The Slate6 is a sleek device weighing just 160g and measuring 8.9mm thin, despite housing a 6-inch HD IPS display.

The Slate6 sports a quad core Marvell PXA1088 1.2Ghz processor, 1GB RAM, 16GB storage, 5MP main camera, 2MP front camera, dual-SIM supporting 3G and runs vanilla Android 4.2.2 out-of-the-box.

For further expansion, the Slate6 supports microSD expansion of up to 32GB. HP has partnered Box to offer owners complimentary additional 25GB of cloud storage.
