The Dubai police force may soon be adopting the use of fully functional hoverbikes. The vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft for the police force was showcased at the Gulf Information Technology Exposition last week.
Yes, you read that right. The Dubai police force will soon be utilising actual hoverbikes, designed and made by Russian company, Hoversurf.
The single-seater hoverbike is capable of flying at approximately 43mph (70kmph) and can carry as much as 300kg of gear along with it.
The vehicle is called Scorpion, and it can fly at a height of five metres and has a travel time of 25 minutes.
So, what is the main purpose of these hoverbikes?
The police force intends to use it as tools for officers to bypass traffic and other obstacles during emergencies.
Alongside the hoverbikes at the expo, a Japanese company called Mikasa has unveiled a new electric motorcycle concept which claims to have a 124mph (200kmph) top speed.
The Dubai authorities are also planning to roll out small driverless vehicles for urban area surveillance.
Dubai is serious about its transformation into “the smartest city in the world.” Back in September it announced that it was adding a fleet of driverless taxis to the city. The city aims to add flying taxis to the mix in the future.
Earlier in the year, it also introduced a robot to assist people in the streets or in malls. It co-designed by the Dubai police, IBM’s Watson and Google.
The Dubai police expects 50 percent of police buildings to be self-powered by 2030, and by the same year have the first smart police station which doesn’t require human employees.
