Apple iPads and iPhones are immensely popular and in demand in China. People beg, borrow, steal and fight over the devices. What happens if you’re dying to get your hands on an iPad 2 but can’t afford it? You build one yourself. A talented 21-year old Chinese man (respect, yo!) — Liu Xinying did just that — assembling his very own iPad, DIY style using computer components, touch screen and a case with a keypad.

In a 20-minute video entitled “DIY iPad 3” posted on Youku, the Chinese YouTube equivalent, Liu expertly builds one to the sound of heavy metal music. The finished masterpiece is a full functional tablet which resembles the iPad, but unfortunately runs Microsoft Windows (why not a Hackintosh eh?). The iPad-knockoff cost him 2,000 yuan ($309) to make, and since the video has been posted, he has been receiving requests from people to build more! The iPad 2 iPad 2 sells for 3,688 yuan in China.
