Celcom has finally announced that it will offer the new nano-SIM starting October 6, 2012, joining the likes of Maxis and DiGi who announced availability last month. The nano-SIM availability is in preparation of the impending launch of the iPhone 5 locally, expected to be on October 26, 2012.

The Celcom nano-SIM is open to all Celcom postpaid users. Subscribers for more than 12 months will be able to exchange their existing micro-SIM into nano-SIM for free while subscribers less than 12 months will have to fork out a nominal fee of RM5. Unfortunately, prepaid users have been left out in the lurch, for now.

The nano-SIM (or 4FF, for fourth form factor) has the same contact area as its predecessor, the micro-SIM or 3FF but is 40% smaller and 15% thinner (12.3mm x 8.8 mm x 0.67 mm) than the smallest micro-SIM design.

Celcom’s announcement, completes the local nano-SIM puzzle with the three major telcos, leaving darkhorse U Mobile yet to reveal a date. When contacted regarding the availability of its nano-SIM, a U Mobile representative replied, “Soon.”
