Things are about to get much faster for Sabahans, at least in terms of internet connectivity. Celcom has just announced the availability of its fibre broadband service in the Land Below the Wind. This will cover both rural and urban areas.
The rollout is in line with the state government’s agenda for a Sabah Smart City, by offering fast internet speeds at affordable cost. The service will be handled by Celcom Timur Sdn Bhd.
Celcom first announced its Home Broadband service in April last year, limited to 10Mbps and in the Klang Valley only.
Speedy home
Our Sabahan friends get it better, with speeds of up to 40Mbps. For home users, there’s a base Home Fibre 120 plan that gives you 10Mbps at MYR120/month.
Next up is the Home Fibre 150 plan that offers 20Mbps at MYR150/month.
The top rung Home Fibre 180 gives you blazing speeds of 40Mbps at MYR180/month.
The plans offer unlimited quota, with synchronous speeds, meaning same upload and download speeds.
You’ll get the modem free, and if you’re a Celcom FIRST Gold Plus, Gold Supreme, Platinum or Platinum Plus customer, you get a special rebate of MYR15 off your monthly bills (except Home Fibre 120 plan).
The Celcom Home Broadband plans look competitive compared to unifi, although the latter offers HyppTV IPTV as a value-add service.
By the way, you can also make calls with the three plans, at a rate of 10sen/minute to all networks.
Fibre for biz
Celcom hasn’t forsaken its business users. There are four fibre plans to choose from, with speeds topping 100Mbps and at MYR378/month.
Each subscription comes with a free wireless router, DECT phone and free installation.
Existing FIRST Business Gold Plus, Gold Supreme, Platinum and Platinum Plus customers will also enjoy a MYR20 rebate for 24 months off their monthly bill, with Business Fibre 20 plan and above.
If you register five lines or more under the same company, Celcom is giving an additional MYR20 discount per line.
Calls are charged at a rate of 8sen/min, although Business Fibre 20 plans and above enjoy free 300 minutes to all networks as a bonus.
Celcom said it will extend coverage to 11 locations throughout the state by end of 2017.
