Apple has released a couple of new iPhone 13 ads highlighting key features such as splash resistance and durability.
The first spot entitled “Shake” opens with a dog looking slightly bored under the hot sun as it gazes at the swimming pool. Its owner is engrossed with her iPhone as she’s seated on a deck chair by the pool, under the shade. The dog then dives into the pool and then gets out, walks over to its owner and cheekily shakes itself dry, showering her and the iPhone 13. All in beautiful slow motion before the supers appear, “iPhone 13. Spill and splash resistant.”
Continuing the tradition of singular focus ads, the second ad titled “Edge” sees an iPhone 13 sitting on the edge of the table (why?). And incoming call causes the phone to vibrate incessantly and finally, the phone falls off the table with a thud. The supers then read, “iPhone 13 with Ceramic Shield. Tougher than any smartphone glass. Relax, it’s iPhone.”
iPhone 13 and iPhone 12 series feature IP68-rated dust and water resistance, which means protection against complete, continuous submersion in water of up to six metres for up to 30 minutes. However, do note that liquid damage is not covered under warranty and Apple does advise to not go swimming or bathing with your iPhone; expose the phone to pressurised or high velocity water; submerging the iPhone in water; amongst other things.
The key word here is “water-resistant” as opposed to “waterproof.”
For your general knowledge, Ceramic Shield is made by Corning (who else?) and is exclusive to the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 family). Apple claims that Ceramic Shield is tougher than any other smartphone glass, offering four times better drop protection than previous generation iPhones. It is unclear if Ceramic Shield is tougher or as tough as Gorilla Glass Victus, also made by Corning and used in the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S21, which is claimed to be the toughest version of Gorilla Glass ever made.
