Unleashing the Data Torrent (with Caveats)
While “unlimited” is a tantalising word, it’s crucial to acknowledge the asterisk hidden in its fine print. In this case, the plan offers a generous “unlimited” 300GB of high-speed data quota, albeit capped to 6Mbps. Exceed the 300GB quota in 30 days, your internet transforms into a nostalgic dial-up experience i.e basic internet speed of 64Kbps. If you’re one who devours data like Pac-Man chomping pellets, this cap could pose a potential hurdle. Still, 300GB provides ample room for streaming, browsing, and downloading, allowing you to binge-watch entire seasons, blast playlists endlessly, and fuel your online shopping sprees with glee.
Calls and Voice Notes: Freedom to Connect
Unlimited calls and voice notes? Consider it a double check! Whether you’re a social butterfly glued to the phone or a meme whisperer expressing yourself through audio snippets, this plan ensures your communication needs are met without breaking the bank. Say goodbye to anxieties about call charges and embrace the boundless joy of staying connected.
Hotspot Hero or Data Drain?: Sharing with Responsibility
Sharing is caring, and the NEXT Unlimited 40 plan empowers you to do just that with 10GB of dedicated hotspot data. Transform your phone into a Wi-Fi oasis for friends or power your laptop when venturing beyond the confines of a wired connection. However, remember, sharing can be a double-edged sword. Keep an eye on that data meter, particularly if your companions have trigger-happy download fingers – you wouldn’t want your generosity to leave you data-deprived. In the event that you do deplete your hotspot data, you can top-up for RM15 per 20GB.
Beyond the Glimmer: Considerations and Caveats
While the plan undeniably shines with its features, acknowledging its limitations is crucial for informed decision-making. After the 300GB high-speed data threshold, your internet speeds will be noticeably throttled. Additionally, the plan lacks data rollover, meaning any unused gigabytes vanish at the end of the month, like Cinderella’s carriage at midnight.
Fair Usage Policy: Navigating the Data Highway with Responsibility
The Fair Usage Policy (FUP) acts as the traffic warden on this data highway. While 300GB is an ample allowance, exceeding it within a 30-day period could trigger speed throttling. You would argue that internet access is a basic human right but “basic internet” speeds of 64Kbps is simply not right.

5G Booster: Unleashing the Turbocharge
For those who demand the ultimate speed, the NEXT Unlimited 40 has a hidden ace up its sleeve: the 5G Booster. Available since 5 December 2023, grab a 1-day, 3-day or 7-day 5G booster via the MyDigi app. With an additional investment starting from just RM3, you can upgrade your plan and experience the blazing-fast world of 5G even after hitting the 300GB limit. Another caveat: 5G internet speeds are capped at 100Mbps.
The Verdict: A Data Playground with Rules, but Options for Customisation
Digi’s Prepaid NEXT Unlimited 40 isn’t perfect, but for RM40, it offers a compelling proposition for data-hungry users who can manage their usage within the 300GB limit. If occasional speed reductions aren’t dealbreakers, and you value unlimited calls and hotspot sharing, this plan could be your ideal match. However, for those who prioritise unthrottled speeds or require massive data allowances, alternative plans within the NEXT lineup might be more suitable (or just buy a 5G Booster).
