Auf wiedersehen Gelandewagen! The G65 AMG’s last hurrah

Mercedes AMG G65

Can we all take a moment to appreciate the beauty and ruggedness of the evergreen G-Class? Mercedes-AMG is now saying auf wiedersehen to the G65 AMG with the ‘Final Edition’.

Yes, the daddy of SUV’s is performing its swan song for the 2017 model year. Mercedes AMG is now selling the final batch of the G65 AMG in a limited production run. How many? As the name states, only 65 models will be built before production stops for the current iconic wagen. Fret not however, as the new G-Class is now in development and should be making its world debut sometime later.

Back to the star, the Mercedes AMG G65 has a few nicknames, the “Gelandewagen” or “Black Pig” has been around since the late 1970s. Ever since then, the company has used the same body-on-frame strategy for their newer G-Classes. All of which had different engines and multiple cosmetic enhancements.

For the ‘Final Edition’ however, the only engine it will carry is a 6.0L V12 twin-turbocharged petrol engine with multi-spark injection. The heart puts out 621bhp and 1,000Nm of torque. All of that power is channeled through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and sends power to all four wheels.

For the speedy gonzales in you, you’ll be happy to know that the G65 will do the century sprint in just 5.3 seconds. But, the top speed is limited to 230kmph. A bit of a “potong stim” moment, but at least you have tremendous amounts of torque.

As this is an AMG, the changes don’t just stop at the mechanical bits. The G65 ‘Final Edition’ receives a full AMG makeover with matte bronze elements donned across the entire SUV. Those elements can be found within the grille surrounds, under-ride guards, mirrors and finishing off the 21-inch wheels.

Additionally, the V12 monster boasts AMG trim strips along the sides, silver brake calipers, matte black running boards, tailpipes as well as high-gloss black exterior protective strip.

The theme is continued further with the G65’s interior. Inside, you’ll find “designo” black nappa leather, top-stitching, and carbon fibre elements.

Also, Mercedes-AMG’s designers have also added floor mats with leather edging, and the milled ‘Edition’ lettering in the grab handle.

Now, all of this luxury comes at a price. So for the limited G65 Final Edition, you’ll be paying a total amount of MYR1,542,294.

A small price to pay for an icon, and yes, it will definitely make heads turn.
