The world’s first commercially available smartphone with a curved edge display is here — the Samsung GALAXY Note Edge. Announced late last year, the GALAXY Note Edge has been commercially available in Malaysia since last Friday, 6 February 2015.
To build a curved edge display is no mean feat and to give where credit is due, Samsung has done more than merely to prove that “because we can.” The Edge Screen on the right edge is useful and provides a revolutionary way to interact with your phone — less interruptions, more immersive screen experience.
Aside from the unique edge screen, the GALAXY Note Edge shares much of its underpinnings with the Note 4. The 5.6-inch Quad+ HD Super AMOLED screen is mindblowingly sharp, pushing 640PPI. That’s several hundreds of PPI that your retina can possibly interpret.
Powering the Note Edge is a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 running up to 2.6Ghz, mated to an Adreno 420 GPU. There’s a generous 3GB RAM to meet all your multitasking needs and 32GB storage as standard.
One of the Note Edge’s core strengths is the Sony-built Exmor RS IMX240 16MP autofocus camera with OIS that’s capable of 4K video recording. The front camera is a 3.7MP with a 120-degree wide angle lens.
Another core pillar is the Fast Charging feature that gets your Note Edge up and running in less time.
Comes in “Charcoal Black” and “Frost White” the GALAXY Note Edge retails at RM2,999 and is available from all Samsung Experience Stores and Samsung authorised retailers.
First impressions
If there’s one word to describe the Note Edge at first glance and at first pick-up is that it’s big. Because it has a curved edge, it’s also chunkier than a Note 4. The asymmetrical nature of the design makes it unique and it’s overall well-built. The 5.6-inch display is gorgeous. I must admit that when I first saw the Edge Screen I thought it was another one of those gimmicks that looked cool but did little else. But having played around with it, I’ve come to appreciate that it’s a second minimalist screen that’s both non-intrusive and pretty handy. It’s customisable and there’s a growing app portfolio for it. So it can only get better. Performance-wise, it feels snappy and it should since it has the Snapdragon 805 and some 3GB of RAM underneath. The 16MP camera is outstanding, and Fast Charging works like a charm.
