Lighter than air.

LaVie Z

Unknown to many, Lenovo and NECP (NEC Personal Computers) have been bosom buddies in the Japan market since 2011. Aside from the business and enterprise market, you hardly hear the name NEC in the retail ranks locally.

But wait, here’s a shocker. The JV partners introduced two new notebooks that completely redefine the term “lightweight computing.” Welcome the Lenovo LaVie HZ550 and HZ750, the world’s lightest 13-inch ultrabook and notebook respectively.

If you’re currently lugging around that 3kg block of chips in your backpack, I sympathise. Perhaps you’ll want to consider the LaVie — self-professed “lighter than air” notebooks.

Lenovo isn’t kidding though. The LaVie HZ550 weighs just 780g while the HZ750 tops up at 925g. They may be light, but hardly fragile. The body is made from specialised magnesium-lithium (Mg-Li), along with a forged magnesium-lithium forged back cover.

Lenovo’s expertise in Yoga-fying everything is also seen on the LaVie. It gains 360-degree capability with the famous hinge pioneered by Lenovo.

Light and thin means it compromises on performance right? Well, think again. Both notebooks are powered by up to a 5th generation Intel Core i7 processor with 128GB SSD.

The Lenovo LaVie HZ550 and HZ750 will be available in May 2015 in the US, priced at priced at US$1,299 (RM4,635) and US$1,499 (RM5,3480) respectively via www.lenovo.com. In Japan, the new LaVie models will be available in Spring.
