In a surprising (but much welcomed) move, Acer unveiled a purpose-built gaming notebook for the masses in October this year — the Acer Aspire V Nitro – Black Edition. The sleek, power-packed notebook, IMHO, is one of 2014’s best surprises. After getting a brief hands-on experience at the launch, I had the opportunity to test drive a review unit for a couple of weeks. I remain impressed with the gaming portable which performed well on all fronts. Catch the unboxing pics after the jump.
The Aspire V Nitro is sleek and slim and well-built all round. The outer casing is textured, made of soft touch NIL (Nano Imprint Lithography) technology so it’s pretty nice to touch.
The 15.6-inch Full HD IPS display is pretty awesome coupled with some powerful innards, it delivers a full gaming experience despite it being a portable.

First impressions
I had a good first impression of the Aspire V Nitro at the launch and my fondness grew as I used it more during the review proper. It makes no pretenses of what it is — a budget-friendly, kick-ass gaming notebook that delivers on all counts.
It’s pretty nice looking although not half as sexy as a Razer Edge Pro or an Alienware 13. Looks aside, I’m glad Acer didn’t hold back in packing in some great hardware. There’s very little to complain about the Aspire V Nitro, including its sub-RM3,500 price tag.
What’s great is that it’s also suitable as a general purpose notebook with battery life of up to 5 hours.
Well played Acer, well played.
