At the recent IFA 2014 consumer electronics trade show in Berlin, Intel launched the new Intel Core M processor – the latest purpose-built processor platform for high performance, low-power applications in the thinnest, fanless ultra-mobile devices. Major PC vendors including the likes of Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo and Toshiba have already the journey to deliver razor thin devices in the coming months.
The Intel Core M delivers 50% faster compute performance and 40% faster graphics performance versus the comparable, previous 4th generation Core processor (Y series). When compared to even older PCs, the performance gains are even bigger – up to 2x better compute performance and up to 7x better graphics.
Perhaps even more important is power efficiency and battery life. This is what the Intel Core M delivers in droves. Back in 2013, Intel delivered the biggest generation over generation battery life improvement in the company’s history. The Intel Core M pushes the envelope even further. The new processor handles more than eight hours of video play, or 20% (1.7 hours) longer battery life versus the previous generation Intel Core processor.
Intel Core M’s impressive performance and efficiency is attributed to several things – it is 50% smaller, and draws as little as 4.5W, which is 60% lower thermal power (TDP) than the previous generation.
For the business crowd, Intel Core M comes with Intel vPro Technology which supports Intel Pro Wireless Display – for immersive visual experience with enhanced security and data privacy. Select Intel Core M vPro platforms will support WiGig-based wireless docking. Other hardware-assisted enhancements include enhanced encryption and secure managed containers with Intel SS Pro 2500 Series.
With Intel Core M, OEMs can now design sleeker, fanless systems that are less than 9mm – thinner than today’s thinnest notebooks, and some tablets too. Since the preview of Intel Core M and Intel’s Llama Mountain reference device at Computex 2014 Taiwan, there are already more than 20 Intel Core M-powered devices in the pipeline with the first systems to reach consumers hands before the holiday season.

Intel said it is working with ODMs like Wistron to further system choice and availability. Wistron plans a device inspired by Llama Mountain.
Intel Core M is a “conflict-free” product – it does not contain conflict material (tin, tantalum, tungsten and/or gold) that directly/indirectly finance or benefit armed groups in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) or adjoining countries.
Availability
The Intel Core M processor is available in various versions: the up to 2.0Ghz Intel Core M-5Y 10/5Y10a processors; and the up to 2.6Gh Intel Coree M-5Y70 processor.
The Core M-5Y70 is the highest performing Core M processor and is available with Intel vPro technology for business 2-in-1 devices.
Additional features include support for high-quality audio, Intel Wireless Display 5.0, Intel’s 2nd generation 802.11ac, support for wireless docking with Intel WiGig.
